Zero-emission trucks: new Chair of ACEA Commercial Vehicle Board pleas for infrastructure ramp-up

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has elected Martin Lundstedt, CEO of Volvo Group, as chairman of the Commercial Vehicle Board next year.

“2022 will be a definite year on the road to offshore oil transport,” Lundstedt said.

The European Parliament and the governments of this country are discussing the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which will bring targets for tariffs and increase oil prices for any EU member state. The European Commission also wants to propose changes to the CO2 standards for heavy vehicles by the end of this year.

“Battery electric trucks are ready to hit the highway, and fuel trucks will follow soon,” Lundstedt said. “However, the ability of transport operators to invest in air-conditioned vehicles is directly related to the availability of suitable payment and fuel surveillance facilities.”

“Unfortunately, construction that is in line with the real needs of heavy vehicles is almost in short supply today,” Lundstedt warned.

“This is something that AFIR has to deal with urgently, with its dedicated and ambitious ambitions for automotive-related construction. It’s simple: no driver can buy an electric battery without having to pay for it to operate seamlessly.

Planners need to better understand that implementing AFIR’s targets for heavy-duty vehicles now – ahead of the revised CO2 standards later in 2022 – will advance the reduction of CO2 emissions that can be expected to carry road goods by the end of the decade.

ACEA also stated that the requirements for car construction are quite different for public transport – especially when it comes to space, location and limited energy.

ACEA’s CV Board of Directors elects its Chairman annually. Mr Lundstedt is taking over from Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Truck.
