Young Donegal people urged to ‘Mind your melon’


Mind your Melon, a free online mental health and youth health celebration, launched at the recent Donegal Youth Council AGM conference.

The online festival seeks to promote good health and fitness as well as showcase great activities for young people in the region. Young people are encouraged to visit www.mindyourmelon.ie and see the headings on the map of Donegal, which have some well-known sections in the region.

The online festival features inspiring interviews, lively demonstrations and information on psychiatric treatment and youth activities.

The group includes inspirational stories from Nikki Bradley (Flexible and Motivational Speaking), Jason Black (Global Endurance Athlete – Irish Red Cross Global Ambassador), Dr Easkey Britton (swimmer, scientist, researcher) demonstrations by Ryan McHugh ( Donegal GAA Player) by Finn van der Aar (water scientist, writer and cook), tips and tricks to help your mental health with Jigsaw Donegal and many more.

Your Mind Melon was developed by Donegal mental health charity Connect Mental Health in collaboration with Jigsaw Donegal and Foróige. Created ‘For Young People, and Adolescents’ – Young people from the Donegal Youth Council and the Jigsaw Youth Advisory Team have been instrumental in creating and organizing the festival and planning what they want to see.

Tara Toye, Donegal Youth Councilor and member of the Jigsaw Donegal YAP said, “I have been very involved in this project and I have learned a lot about youth health. It is very important for young people to be informed of these new developments.

The chairman of Connect Mental Health Ciaran McLoone added, ‘We encourage the people of Donegal to take ownership of Mind your Melon, to share it with your friends, family and youth. Schools may register to participate www.mindyourmelon.ie and we have tools that schools, sports teams and youth teams can use to promote this celebration to young people. ‘

HSE Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention Sean Mc Grory added “I dedicate all my support to the latest developments in Mind Your Melon Youth mental health health in 2021. This event is a partnership between community and health professionals from Health, Donegal County Council, Youth Service and Youth. Council, Jigsaw, Connect Mental Health and especially young people. During COVID, young people are facing some challenges and I hope that this welcome event will provide the necessary health care throughout the region and guide young people and their caregivers to meet their needs. “

Mental health is an important part of a person’s health. Combining psychological well-being with adolescence helps to promote the development of healthy and resilient adults.
