Yahoo Japan allows 8,000 of its employees to work in remote areas, regardless of where they live in the country, and to pay for their travels if asked to come to the office.

The program, which will include air travel, will take effect on April 1, the company said in a statement. The Japanese Times.

Yahoo employees in Japan have been working under “office everywhere” since 2014, although prior to the epidemic the company took these remote days up to five months each month.

Yahoo Japan president Kentaro Kawabe wrote on Twitter that about 90% of the company’s employees are now working remotely and many of them say their jobs have been saved or remanded at home.

“That’s why we allow Yahoo staff to live anywhere in Japan,” Kawabe said, as we have seen The Japanese Times. “This does not mean that we reject the benefits of the office – you will be able to fly when needed.”

To finance travel within the long-distance operating system, Yahoo has set a budget of ¥ 150,000 (approximately € 1,153) per month per employee. The company hopes that this will promote culture and well-being, and will organize meetings, sponsored by ¥ 5,000 (€ 39) per employee per month.

Yahoo’s remote operating systems reflect developments across the country at a time when employee well-being seems to be at the forefront. Many Japanese businesses received flexible work arrangements during the epidemic, although they had a culture that prided themselves on working long hours in offices.

In 2020, Fujitsu announced it would cut its office by half and allow 80,000 of its employees to work from home. Last week, Panasonic Japan unveiled plans for a four-day week, which it plans to launch in 2023.

“The well-being of our staff is of paramount importance and it is important that we communicate and promote an understanding of this purpose and the importance of this system from the management team to the management of all organizations and employees,” said a Panasonic spokesman. “We are ready to take the time for all negotiations to take place and we do not anticipate its implementation until early April 2023.”
