World Table Tennis Championships: Heartbreak for Sathiyan as he loses thriller against Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna

India’s G. Sathiyan lost at the World Table Tennis Championships after a stint against Quadri Aruna on Thursday. The Indian rider came down against the Nigerian when the goals were scored 11-9, 7-11, 13-15, 11-3, 11-9, 11-9. The game was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

Sathiyan was the only Indian crew left to compete in medals for singles. With his release, the prospect of a medal at India’s international tennis tournament in the singles event for single men and women was dashed.

However, all hope was not lost on the Indian team. The two women team of Manika Batra / Archana Kamath and the combined team of Sharath Kamal / Archana Kamath and Manika / Sathiyan are still alive in the competition.

In two women’s matches, Manika and Archna beat Nathalie Marchetti and Margo Degraef of Belgium 11-4, 11-7, 11-6. The Indian pair now meet Dora Madarasz and Georgina Pota in the pre-quarter-quarterly contest.

In the mixed race, Sharaht and Archana beat Egyptian side Assar and Meshref 3-2 to advance to Round of 16. The two will meet Jia Nan Yuan of France and Emmanuel Lebesson.

Manika and Sathiyan, on the other hand, defeated two Puerto Rican Adriana Diaz and Brian Afanador 3-1. He now meets USA and China team Wang Manyu and Kanak Jha in an international tennis tournament.
