Wales to reduce Covid isolation period to seven days in line with England

Wales and reducing its isolation period for people who have been tested for Covid-19 from 10 to 7 days in line with England, the Welsh Government has said.

People should be able to reduce the amount of time they need to isolate themselves if they have two back tests taken every six to seven days.

Originally the new law is due to be enacted on January 5, but now it will come into effect a few days earlier on December 31.

The changes, which were announced Thursday as part of a weekly Wales Government review of coronavirus restrictions, are reducing the impact of isolation on hard work, it said.

Health Minister Eluned Morgan also agreed to lend more than four million tests to the English NHS, which was offered 10 million, while concerns about the need remain.

Ms Morgan said Wales has more and more ongoing tests, enough to meet the country’s needs in the coming weeks.

The government says the epidemic remained “unstable” after threats rose over the Christmas period, possibly due to Omicron differences.

Wales moved to Alert Level 2 on Boxing Day, mainly to limit the number of people who can meet at public events and updates, as well as to bring back the six rules at the hospitality center.

Disease statistics have been identified and the seven-day number has risen to more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 people in Wales.

The cases are most prevalent among those between the ages of 20 and 29 and between the ages of 30 and 39, and cases are increasingly common among the elderly.

Hospitals remain lower than in previous waves, but they are also increasing. The total number of occupants of the Covid-19 bed has grown by one-third over the Christmas period due to the combination of Omicron and Delta cases.

The number of Covid-19 patients admitted to the hospital rose to 446 on Wednesday, 49% more than the same day last week.

But the number of Covid-19 patients in need of intensive care has not increased.

An estimated 1.6 million people have been vaccinated in the country.

In view of the seriousness of the virus that it poses, it is extremely important that each of us continue to follow simple steps that can help reduce the spread of the virus and the risks it poses to all of us.

First Minister Mark Drakeford stated: “At this time, the Christmas season is well under way.

“It deteriorated last week when the Omicron waves arrived. We have seen a dramatic increase in coronavirus cases – many of which are probably due to Omicron variability.

“This is similar to what is happening in the UK.

“In view of the seriousness of the risk posed by the virus, it is imperative that each of us continue to follow simple steps that can help reduce the spread of the virus and the potential risks to all of us.”

The Welsh Conservatives have said they will accept changes to the independence period but said it should have been introduced last week when the UK government announced it would take action.

The party also called on the Labor Government to publish evidence that it used as a basis for increasing sanctions on public meetings.

In their statement, they said: “It is not enough that they want to impose restrictions, which do not make sense, without providing us with the necessary evidence to prove it.
