UK Urges 'Coordinated' Global Response After Migrant Boat Tragedy

UK-France Boat Disaster: Officials said in the past three helicopters and three boats had searched the area.

Britain on Thursday called for a “global effort” across Europe to curb human trafficking after at least 27 migrants drowned while trying to reach England.

“Yesterday was a time when most of us have been scared for years,” Interior Minister Priti Patel told MPs, repeating his promise to send British police and border officials to France after a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Gerald Darmanin.

The Secretary of State has also refused to ban immigration boats from the Channel, in accordance with new laws enacted in parliament.

But, he said, while new migration funds will help tackle the problem, “we cannot do it alone”.

“This is a difficult issue and there is no easy solution. It means a Herculean effort and it will not be possible without the close cooperation between all the international partners and organizations,” Patel said.

“This requires international cooperation, and I have been in constant contact with my friends from France, Poland, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Greece to name a few because of the crisis, and because we are here. To see 80 million refugees worldwide.”

Following Wednesday’s tragedy, France called for urgent talks between ministers from the European Union, but the international agreement on migration has been disrupted by Brexit.

Downing Street said that, in spite of the UK’s exit from the EU, it was ready to pursue all possible solutions to the crisis and stressed that asylum seekers should put their case in a safe place such as France.

“Obviously we want to work with our European counterparts, recognizing that this is a problem that does not just affect the UK, to ensure that people who need to seek protection can do so in safe countries,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesman told reporters. .
