Toshiba Achieves World’s First Demonstration of Substantial Improvements in HDD Recording Performance with Microwave Assisted Switching – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAS-MAMR)

– Preliminary Advertising for Over 30TB Large HDD HD – TOKYO, Jan. 13, 2022 / PRNewswire / – Toshiba Group (“Toshiba”) announced on December 27, 2021, the world’s first exhibition[1] HDD recording enhancement by Microwave Assisted Switching-Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAS-MAMR), a technology for next-generation magnetic recording. The show proves that technology offers a great deal of storage, and Toshiba now wants to recognize the first commercial for nearby HDDs with a capacity of more than 30TB. Toshiba is heavily testing R&D at MAMR, a state-of-the-art technology that expands HDD music volume. In 2021, the company began exporting 18TB HDDs using Flux Control MAMR (FC-MAMR ™)[2], which uses spin torque oscillators to aid recording. MAS-MAMR is expected to increase the size of the footprint than FC-MAMR ™ by displaying local radios for recording. However, this was not shown to be possible in practice until the most recent demonstration. Demonstrating that MAS-MAMR is the best, Toshiba has been promoting its development with Showa Denko KK (SDK), the medium-sized HDD maker, and TDK Corporation (TDK), the HDD’s head maker. This three-way collaboration recently bore fruit by demonstrating how MAS-MAMR has completely transformed photography. Toshiba will announce the details of the newly created spin torque oscillator and its oscillation form at the Joint MMM-INTERMAG Conference 2022, an international conference scheduled for January 10th – 14th, 2022. Development Background Digital data storage equipment digital is a digital revolution, and it is now more important than ever because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Continuing demand for storage is growing, and the market for high-end HDDs near HDDs, cloud-based workhorses and traditional information centers, is expected to grow to US $ 17.5 billion by 2025.[3]. Any attempt to increase HDD recording should be threefold for three opposing purposes: reducing the magnetic field on the camera; detect thermally stable magnetic seeds; with adequate security for recording work. The device is coated with transparent magnetic seeds that store information according to where it pulls. Although the sample size can be maintained by a slight lowering of the camera on the camera, this requires smaller magnetic particles, which reduces the thermal stability of their magnetic field. Loss of thermal conductivity can lead to data loss. Increasing oil stability by increasing the photographic density requires “compact” materials that are able to retain the magnet. However, high pressure makes it difficult for the recording head to produce enough magnetic force for recording. Overcoming this requires modern magnetic resonance imaging technology that is supported by external forces. Advances are being made in the next generation R&D of digital magnetic recording technology to deal with this trilemma. Although MAS-MAMR to assist with the use of microwaves is expected to enhance the maximum imagination, mental validation of the microwave-assisted switching effect (MAS-MAMR effect) in recording and direct recording with MAS-MAMR has not yet been demonstrated. Technology Toshiba model developed a “bi-oscillation type spin torque oscillator device (dual FGL STO)” that turns on microwaves and double-layer components. “Dual FGL STO” creates microwaves that are efficient, stable and stable. Incorporated into the recording head, it can enhance the recording with MAS-MAMR. In the MAS-MAMR demonstration project, TDK has created new recording themes with STOs, SDK has created new recordings, and Toshiba has confirmed the stability of STOs on new recording themes. Subsequently, Toshiba confirmed the effects of MAS-MAMR by combining newly created STOs, recording captions and media, and for the first time in the world showed a change of approximately 6dB in recording with MAS-MAMR.[4]. This technology makes it possible to identify HDDs with a maximum power of more than 30TB. In theory, MAS-MAMR has taken a major step forward as a modern magnetic resonance imaging technology that can dramatically change photographic scale. Future Prospects Toshiba now wants to recognize the first commercial for nearby HDDs with over 30TB capacity and MAS-MAMR technology. The company will continue to develop MAMR technologies (FC-MAMR ™ and MAS-MAMR) and expand the number of nearby HDDs. Toshiba will also continue to develop Thermal Assisted Magnetic Recording (TAMR) technology similarly, to meet the various storage needs.
