Tesla recalls nearly half a million cars over safety issues

Tesla Inc remembers more than 475,000 of its Model 3 and Model S electric vehicles to solve the problem of the rear camera and boot that increases the risk of a fall, the U.S. road safety director said.

Tesla shares were down 1.1 percent in the stock market on Thursday.

The U.S. automotive manufacturer manufactures 356,309 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles to address the rear camera problem and Model S 119,009 vehicles due to future traffic problems, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.

The total number of restored vehicles is about half a million cars that Tesla provided last year. Tesla could not be reached for comment.

For Model 3 sedans, “the rear camera cable may be damaged by the opening and closing of the camera. [boot] cover, preventing the rear camera image from viewing, ”said NHTSA.

For the Model S vehicles, the front latch pressure can cause the boot to open “without warning and disable the driver’s interface, increasing the risk of accident,” Tesla said.

Tesla is unaware of any accidents, injuries or deaths related to the complications of its Model 3 and Model S vehicles, NHTSA said.

Tesla is also being investigated by the NHTSA over a number of issues as the team opened a study on Tesla 580,000 vehicles on the idea of an automaker allowing games to be played on car shows while on the move.

Tesla agreed to stop allowing video games to be played on car screens while its vehicles were moving, according to the NHTSA.

In August, NHTSA opened a safety audit on Tesla Inc’s driver assist system Autopilot following several accidents involving Tesla models and emergency vehicles.

Under pressure from the group, Tesla in February agreed to recall 135,000 vehicles with visuals that could fail and cause accidents.
