Special Meeting 2/2021 of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AIHR) held a Special Meeting 2/2021 on 23-24 November 2021 via video. The meeting was chaired by HE Hajah Nor Hashimah Haji Mohammed Taib, Brunei Darussalam Representative to the AICHR, attended by AICHR Representatives / Representatives, and ASEAN Secretariat.

The conference discussed the implementation of the AICHR Priority Programs / Activities of 2021, in particular the ASEAN Human Rights Dialogue and other areas of concern, such as the rights of children, the rights of persons with disabilities, human rights and migration, human rights and the environment, and human rights. Institutional issues were discussed, including the formulation of the AICHR Five Year Work Plan 2021-2025 Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), as well as the transition between the AICHR Representatives for 2019-2021 and the coming AICHR Representatives for 2022-2022.

The meeting recognized the legal frameworks (CSOs) affiliated with the AICHR, as well as the management of correspondence to the AICHR and the ASEAN Secretariat. The conference also focused on recent developments and recent human rights trials by the AICHR Representatives of Indonesia and the Philippines in their respective countries.

At the summit, the AICHR met with the Australian Mission to ASEAN and the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), as well as the Southeast Asia National Human Rights Institution Forum (SEANF) and discussed future agreements on human rights issues. AICHR 2021-2025 Five-Year Action Plan and AICHR 2022 Key Programs / Activities.

The meeting ended with a fundraising event from Brunei Darussalam as Chair of the AICHR in Cambodia. The conference commended HE Hajah Nor Hashimah Haji Mohammed Taib and the Secretariat for his excellent performance as Chair of the AICHR, and welcomed Cambodia as Chair of AICHR 2022.
