Russia Arrests Alleged Members of Ransomware Hacking Group REvil

Russian authorities on January 14 announced the arrest of more than a dozen members of the so-called REvil hacking group, who have been accused by the United States of engaging in several high-profile ransomware threats. In May 2021, the REvil hackers were accused of disrupting the work of the Colonial Pipeline, the largest oil pipeline in the US, and of attacking JBS, the world’s largest meat processing plant. Two months later, REvil took out a loan on another cyberattack extension that affected hundreds of businesses in the US and abroad, seeking to repay cryptocurrency payments to restore the computer system. Friday’s announcement by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) was an example of the lack of cooperation between Washington and Moscow. The FSB said it began investigating the group after receiving information from “well-known US organizations that identified a terrorist group leader and group involvement in attacks on high-profile foreign corporations by setting up criminal activities, data theft and extortion.” Russian news agency TASS The FSB reported that it attacked 25 addresses linked to 14 so-called REvil members, seizing “more than 426 million rubles ($ 5.6 million) including cryptocurrency; 600,000 US dollars; 500,000 euros; as well as computer equipment, crypto wallets used for criminal purposes, and the top 20 vehicles purchased with illicit funds. ” Credit: FSB via Storyful
