Residents near Trentham, Upper Hutt, fire told to prepare to leave


Firefighters have brought to light a 2-hectare firefight in Upper Hutt’s Trentham, where people were preparing to evacuate.

A third helicopter is on its way to help put out the fire before dark.

Fire and Emergency Services have been battling the blaze since 3.30pm, including bringing two helicopters with monsoon buckets to put out the blaze. It said that shortly after 5pm the fire started to be rectified.

Staff were called to Evergreen Crescent, Trentham, around 2.30pm.

As a precaution, about 10 nearby homes have been requested to relocate if needed.

The fire is located in the mountains above Trentham and smoke is found across the Hutt Valley.

Fire and Emergency Services asked people not to leave the area and let firefighters do their job.

Kathy David, a resident of Evergreen Crescent, said firefighters put out the blaze on a hill just above its road, but it continues on the other side of the hill, near Rimutaka prison.

He also said that he was worried about his neighbors when they saw a fire on the roof of their house.

“It was coming down [the hill] very quickly. Luckily the firefighters were able to get in quickly and straighten out. ”

Lorna Haliburton, who also lives on the road, said the fire was too far away from the mountain, which is why she was worried about neighbors living down below.

“We were standing outside the garage, and we felt hot.”

No one was asked to prepare for the move.

An artist at the scene said it appeared that some parts of the fire were disappearing and there was a small noise in the air.

Alexander Rd was closed and people seemed to be denied access.

Trentham resident Nicole Satherley said she saw flames on the side of the mountain as she was returning from Wellington and was affected by her home.

“The fire spread very quickly down the hill,” he said.

He was driving near a bush when a fire broke out behind a courthouse and a military camp.

Satherley said he had seen a new fire start in several areas leading to Rimutaka Prison around 4pm.

“I heard flames and the smoke was very black in some places.”

He saw firefighting helicopters filling their monsoon buckets at nearby Davis Field.
