Manchester United are set to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their permanent manager on a six-month contract.
The 63-year-old German is set to join United but will not be in charge this week against Chelsea pending his transfer.
United teamed up with Rangnick, but not with Lokomotiv Moscow, where he is a major player in development and development.
It comes after United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday following a three-year non-threat as a manager.
Rangnick won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011 and took RB Leipzig for the last time in 2019.
In 2010-11 he led Schalke to the Champions League final, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United, who were beaten by Barcelona in the final.
United are eighth in the Premier League and Solskjaer, who scored the winner in the 1999 Champions League final for the club, was eliminated following a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday.
Michael Carrick, Solskjaer’s assistant, has been temporarily suspended, with United saying they will be on hand to appoint a permanent manager at the end of the season.
Carrick overcame United on Tuesday in a 2-0 win over Villarreal, a result that ensured they finished top of their Champions League standings.
Rangnick made a good coaching career during his stay in Germany, mainly through Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.
He later coached Red Bull and his current club Lokomotiv have a Europa League match against Lazio on Thursday evening and United are careful not to interfere with their preparations.
Rangnick was impressed with his initial conversation with United officials earlier this week.
However, he also discussed more about his role at the end of the season.
Senior United statistics believe that Rangnick’s expertise will be invaluable in terms of technology and design.
This move reinforces the concept of Old Trafford clothing to bring in a permanent manager at the end of the season giving them a chance to check out how well they are doing.
Mauricio Pochettino is known to be interested in United’s work, but the Premier League club are afraid to enter into lengthy negotiations with PSG which could take longer than expected.
It is rumored that Carrick will remain in charge of Sunday’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Former Germany international Lutz Pfannenstiel has worked closely with Rangnick at Hoffenheim and believes the move to Old Trafford will be a boon for United.
“Ralf Rangnick is a great professional, one of the best coaches or managers in Germany created 15-20 years ago, I would say,” said Pfannenstiel, chief sports officer at St. Louis. Louis City SC.
“Everything he has done so far has gone well and he always makes it clear that if he gets the chance to work for a big club in England, he wants to do it.
“So looking at the current head coach, I think he is the one who can really settle down to bring back Manchester United. I think he was probably the best man on the market.
“We like to call him Germany, a football professor, everything he does is well thought out, the way he sets up every club is amazing.”
