Pat Cummins announced as Australia captain as Tim Paine takes leave of absence

Pat Cummins has been confirmed to be a man to lead Australia in the Ash just a few hours after the old test site Tim Paine announced his departure from all forms of cricket following an abusive text message.

Paine was confirmed as the ambassador of the 15-man squad in Australia last week before stepping down on November 19, agreeing to a “secret exchange” with his former Cricket Tasmania teammate.

Cricket Australia (CA) announced Friday that Cummins, 28, will step down after two years as vice-captain, with the 32-year-old captain and fighter. Steve Smith be his deputy.

CA CEO Nick Hockley said in his statement Cummins was a “good player and leader”.

“He is highly regarded by his teammates and in all aspects of the game because of his ideas and actions, both inside and outside the court,” added Hockley.

“We are very fortunate to have a team of great players who are top executives. I have no doubt that Pat and Steve will be well supported in their leadership roles.

Cummins said: “I have the opportunity to accept this position ahead of the great Ashes summer. I hope I can provide the same leadership that Tim (Paine) has given the team a few years ago.

“Steve and I as the directors, the biggest players on the team and the talented youngsters coming in are a very strong and connected team.

“This is an unexpected opportunity for which I am very grateful and look forward to it.”

Smith he also qualified for re-election as Australian captain or captain for the second time in March 2020 at the end of a two-year ban imposed on fraud in South Africa.

Just one week after stepping down as captain of the Test, Paine on Friday announced in a statement that he was “taking a break from cricket in the future”.

In response, Hockley said CA realized it was “a very difficult time for Tim and his family and is committed to helping them”.

England face Australia in the first Test in Gabba from December 8 and the fifth and final test is set to take place at Perth’s Optus Stadium from January 14.
