Paisley Park ‘sharper’ ahead of Long Distance date

Emma Lavelle hopes Paisley Park will unveil the “fit and sharp” in Ladbrokes on Friday Far Away in Newbury.

The former athlete who remained a runner is in for another redemption because since he lost his crown in March 2020, he has won just one of the next five races.

The runner-up 12 months ago in Thyme Hill on what was his seasonal bow, this year on his way to Newbury after running for Wetherby for the first time, while the third behind the Paul Webber Indefatigable, was beaten five times.

“At the time we were a little frustrated, I wonder why he does all the hard work for himself,” Lavelle said.

“When we look at the competition again, it probably did better than we thought at the time.

“My stomach aches so much that we need to work harder on her training than we have ever been. She’s big and smart and I think she takes a lot more work.

“He ‘s done a lot since then, including going to Newbury for gallops in the morning where he did a good job. He has to undress a bit and be sharp.”

Lavelle has decided to team up with a nine-year-old with cheekpieces, and work on fences is still going on.

“When we put him on a visor a few years ago he ran like the Hounds of the Baskervilles chasing him to Albert Bartlett. It was horrible and clearly he ran very fast and didn’t last until the end,” Lavelle said.

“We do not dress because he is a liar or self-righteous, so he does not have a visor to cover anything, but to take action to make him look more and prevent him from worrying about running alongside other horses. To think more about the ride and what is happening in the race.”

Not tired of meeting Paisley Park at 6lb worst this season, but Webber is determined to let him have another problem for the guys.

“We were very happy with him at Wetherby. He didn’t go for a disability and the disabled didn’t test the competition much, but we don’t care about that,” he said.

“It looks like a strong race and we’re 6lb worse than we were, then obviously he needs to change, but he needs to be shot.”

Another mare in the field is the winner of Paul Nolan’s Cheltenham Festival Mrs. Milner, who arrived at the Pertemps Final in March.

Since then he has won the Listed mares competition in Limerick.

“Sometimes you just have to do it,” Nolan said.

She is only six years old.

“There will be no reason to jump smart or anything like that. Let’s see how far they can go.”

Olly Murphy admits he was disappointed by Thomas Darby when he was fourth behind the Indefatigable in Wetherby but hopes to get a better look now his horses are much healthier.

“He’s in good shape. To be honest I was a little disappointed with his first season trip to Wetherby. Sean Bowen didn’t think he worked that day,” Murphy said.

“I have tied him with a tongue tie and I hope it will help him finish his race well.

“If I hadn’t taken him to Wetherby I would have loved his run to Aintree (Wednesday to Thyme Hill) but this is a point-finding operation, he has to go do it now.

“Smooth road, three miles, good location – they copy a lot of boxes but they have to go to work now.

“The next day he’ll be very close. He’s fine with the mare that won at Wetherby, my horses are flying now, so the toes have passed.”

Lisnagar Oscar of Rebecca Curtis, a 50-1 win at Stayers’ Hurdle in 2020, and Nicky Henderson’s On The Blind Side complete the mission.

Curtis hopes the Lisnagar Oscar is now back to normal after returning to Aintree.

“I was very happy with Aintree because he always needed his first run and it was over two and a half miles,” said Curtis.

“I liked the way he was and he seems to be in good shape. Apparently this year he doesn’t have a Grade One penalty which would help. He should have a great chance and hope.

“He was a bit successful at Aintree, as I thought he might be. I wonder if he’s as expensive as he is honest.

“Since last year, he has a very good appearance in the tournament but nothing went well last year. He participated in the tournament last year and everything went wrong but now he is fine.”
