Media Release – Tasmanian Small Business Council, 26 November 2021
Anyone would think it was Christmas
“The demographics of the Hobart CBD could reflect almost Christmas,” said Robert Mallett, CEO of Tasmanian Small Business Council today.
“The apparent success of Black Friday sales is similar to that of last year and a good start to Christmas.”
“Lines in large and small businesses throughout the city show that advertising and marketing are essential for customers to enter the business world.”
“Another event, ‘Cyber Monday’ is yet to come with the powerful ads expected over the weekend.”
“Although Australia has been slow to adopt American themes, consumers have taken advantage of the high prices and the rising cost of Christmas.”

XR BLACK FRIDAY VIGIL – OPERATION OR CLIMATE?
Today Extinction Rebellion Hobart has been protesting against corporate-led insults run by Black Friday corporations.
Dressed as colorful bones and adorned with elaborate ‘trade’ signs, signs and banners we will keep people informed and get in touch with our timeless consumer needs and how this contributes to climate change.
Emissions from manufacturing companies are the main contributors to the climate and the environment.
Manufacturing is the largest component of China’s oil and gas pipelines.
Wealthy western countries have insufficient demand for manufactured goods in China and India but we still blame them for their high levels of smoke.
Media marketing and capitalist pressures force us to buy more, have more, and – as a result – produce more waste.
a new report states that up to 80 percent of items — and any plastic containers wrapped in them — will either be discarded, burned or — at best — recycled for good, often after a very short life span.
Surprisingly 80% of all Black Friday purchases are discarded after a few uses.
XR fighter Jackie McDonald states: “We have to live with the values we buy and the quantity we have.”
“We cannot be blaming China and India for their energy emanating from the energy needed to produce all the things we in the rich western world want and destroy.”
“In order to address the climate and environmental crisis, we must transform this system from economic and physical growth to degradation, restructuring and transformation.”
