Some children on New York City schools are still eating outdoors so they can interact with them even though temperatures drop below winter months.
“It’s getting a little silly right now,” said a woman at MS 104 in Manhattan told the New York Post. “They eat out every day this week. It’s cold.”
Temperatures in New York City this week reached 56 degrees Celsius and below 30 degrees. Department of Education allowed teachers to find their own lunch this year to follow the rules regarding social media.
Not all children in New York City public schools are eating out this fall. But parents of children attending the school outdoors are expressing their dissatisfaction.
“It was very difficult for a child to eat outside while sitting on the concrete wearing a mask,” the mother of a fourth-grader from Brooklyn who ate outside this week told the New York Post. “What kind of weather should it be to get in? How low?”
A woman in Park Slope, Brooklyn, said: “We have never heard of anything bringing them home so quickly. “Instead, they are still asking parents to donate their Fresh Direct school bags to make residential papers.
Some parents have told reporters that teachers and administrators do not eat outdoors.
“The problem is that there is no solid way for children to get inside,” said one parent. “It’s up to the principal, whatever he chooses should happen. We hope that in February we will not be out.”
The Department of Education stated that its regulations allow children to eat indoors if requested, but parents were unaware of the law.
“We’ve never been told this,” said Park Slope’s mother. “And I don’t know anyone else.”
Children are also allowed to eat indoors when it rains, the New York Post reported.
The DOE told the Post that it reminded school administrators of its policy that children can eat indoors if questioned.
“Schools and students always have access to food indoors, including in bad weather like rain, extreme heat or cold, hurricanes and much more,” DOE spokeswoman Katie O’Hanlon told the site Wednesday. “Thanks to our amazing food staff, schools can follow lunch in a variety of ways and in different locations if needed.”
