NSW reports 11,201 new COVID-19 cases as Queensland scraps PCR tests for travel

There are 625 people in a hospital in NSW, and 61 are in a major hospital – one more than the previous day.

Hospitals also jumped in Victoria from 361 to 397, bringing the seven days to 379.

Also on Wednesday, Queensland Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that travelers from tropical areas from January 1 could be exposed to adverse antigen effects to meet border requirements.

International delegates are required to demonstrate the PCR test results taken within the last 72 hours.

Queensland on Tuesday announced that it would remove all requirements for arrivals to undergo a PCR test on the fifth day of state visit.

The state health minister, Dr John Gerrard, said there was no evidence that the test protected Queenslanders.

“We have been monitoring the results of the test for the past two weeks, since the border was opened on December 13, to see how many people are being tested for the virus,” he said.

Ms Palaszczuk was forced to drop PCR tests for middle-aged, mostly from the New South Wales government, as the test site was pushed to the limit.

“This is a success,” NSW Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet wrote Wednesday. “PCR tests should be kept for those who are close to those who feel unwell – not healthy people who are looking forward to a well-rounded vacation.”

Meanwhile, Tasmania, reported 55 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday.

More than 150 out of 300 state cases are under house arrest, with 63 people in public hospitals and one person in the hospital due to noncommunicable diseases. Another 23 people are being monitored.

On Tuesday, Queensland cases exceeded 1,000 for the first time, with 1,158 reported, while South Australia reported 995 cases.

There were 252 cases in ACT, 43 in Tasmania, 16 in the Northern Territory and none in Western Australia.
