He played table tennis in New Zealand, but there is no way in the world where Finn Holden could try another “oddball” game like disc golf. Then the Ashburton disc golf came calling.
Remember that weird kid in school who seemed to love the silly and funny games you can imagine?
Well, that was me.
Now, do not misunderstand me, because I am so grateful to be informed of various sports by men.
But sometimes I wish he would push my six-foot and 90kg frame into rugby instead of encouraging me to do chess, table tennis and pickleball.
Then when I realized that Ashburton was jumping on the golf course, I laughed and reassured myself that I would not try.
That I would not allow other classic games to invade my life.
That I will not allow the craving to increase (so they do) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
But within a few weeks, my condition improved and I received an invitation to work on a disc.
For the uninitiated, disc golf is like ordinary golf, except that there are no clubs and balls. The only disc (think frisbee) that players throw and look for wire baskets instead of holes.
If you are healthy, you always throw your disc in the metal basket.
If you are like me, you need a weed eater, flame thrower, six gold bowls and two Sherpa tips to find your lost disc in the woods, trees and larger grass, or just across the street somewhere unlimited. .
Hey, but I looked at the part I was ahead of, because I already had a golf course.
It was sold on a Boxing Day sale a few years ago unused.
Starter packing, I went to the EA Networks Center to find out about it, get a map of the course and a rule outline to see what the buzz was.
Boy, I’m glad I did.
Smiling faces, scenic spots and drowning putts are what the dream set for the Ashburton disc golf course, which opened at the end of October last year.
All 18 holes – yes, they are called holes – live between trees and bushes very hard on the Smallbone Drive reserve near the EA Networks Center.
There is no distance between each hole so it can take less than an hour for most golfers to complete the course.
Surprisingly, no holes were counted and the grass and the ground should be shown more love by those responsible for care.
However, it is difficult to murmur because, as a poor university student, I almost burst into tears when I found out that playing does not cost much.
Yes, thank you.
God bless Ashburton. Because nowadays it is impossible to get anything for free, especially fun and family-friendly sports like playing disc on golf.
This is one reason why so many are participating and why there are about 20,000 golfers in the country and 18 affiliated clubs.
So, listen to those of you who have never tried any sport, to those who have a game break and to those who play amazing games like me.
It is everywhere and it is for everyone. Visit Ashburton. You will not be disappointed.
