| Omicron spreads to southern China city bordering Macau

  • Omicron has been found in one person with very few illnesses and six undiagnosed people after a mass test in the coastal city of Zhuhai.
  • As a result, public buses on Saturday were suspended, and people have been warned not to leave the city.
  • China is facing the challenge of coronavirus as it prepares for the Winter Olympics in Beijing next month.

The southern Chinese city of Zhuhai stopped bus routes on Saturday after announcing the discovery of at least seven members of the local Omicron coronavirus and warning people not to leave the city.

The coastal city of Zhuhai, which runs through the Macau casino, said on Friday Omicron was found in one minor patient and six asymptomatic patients, after launching a massive trial over a case in a nearby city.

China is battling the plague of coronavirus, including several Omicron strains, as the country prepares to fight the virus at the Winter Olympics in Beijing next month.

Millions of people across the country have been ordered to stay home in recent weeks, many domestic flights have been shut down and factories closed.

Zhuhai officials have urged people not to leave the city “unless necessary”, and who are expected to show the results of the Covid test within the last 24 hours.

The city launched a test of 2.4 million people on Friday after a Covid-19 case was discovered in neighboring Zhongshan earlier in the week.

Businesses including gymnasiums, card rooms, gymnasiums and theaters were ordered to close on Thursday, with officials announcing a roadblock to buses in some parts of the city.

China has kept Covid-19 cases at a low ebb throughout the epidemic with its permissive approach to ordering more people to be tested and shut down more easily when a disease is detected.

But the rapidly expanding Omicron has tried this technique in recent weeks, appearing in the city of Tianjin near Beijing before it spread to the central city of Anyang.

National Health Commission spokesman Mi Feng told reporters on Saturday that the country was experiencing “two major challenges” from both the Delta and Omicron strains of the virus.

He warned that areas that have not been affected by the epidemic should “abandon” their prevention strategies and “strengthen the risk assessment”.

The country also reported 104 cases of Covid-19 transmission on Saturday.
