News24.com | Delta still dominates say experts urging third jab

No one knows how the vaccine can help prevent people from catching the newly discovered and rapidly distributed Omicron versions of Covid-19 or how to protect themselves from dangerous diseases.

Lab tests are underway to determine the effectiveness of the vaccine against Omicron and the expected results in a few weeks.

At the moment Delta’s diversity is huge and experts, governments and vaccinators are encouraging people to use booster jabs where available.

Delta has proven to run away from vaccine protection against better susceptibility to Alpha, Beta and Gamma Covid varieties.

But the jabs have been working well to prevent dangerous outbreaks from Delta, reducing the risk of overcrowding.

With Delta still the largest in Europe, some countries are trying to speed up their third jab campaign.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson set a goal to encourage all senior citizens by the end of January and reduce the waiting period to between six and three months.

In the US, Pfizer is seeking permission for its jab to be offered as an incentive for 16- to 17-year-olds.

“It would be a big mistake to go down now,” says Alain Fischer, who coordinates vaccination in France.

“Our message is: Do not worry, the system will remain the same: Strengthen the operation of the three-shot system,” BioNTech co-founder Ugur Sahin said Tuesday.

But Moderna chief executive Stephane Bancel told the Financial Times this week that he hopes to “come down” from the effectiveness of the shooting against the new race.

Lab tests to determine if Omicron is at risk for current vaccines are in progress, a process that should produce results within two to three weeks.

Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna all say they have started a new project for their vaccine aimed at Omicron – if existing jabs do not fit.

When Delta arrived on the scene, Pfizer made a jab especially on the variants but did not release them.

“The clubs were able to rely on the fact that their stadiums were protected from Covid – but they still allow the virus to spread,” said Bruno Canard, a coronavirus specialist with the French research institute CNRS.

Pfizer has promised a new vaccine within 100 days but the release will take a long time and will not be until the spring, Canard said.

“Currently, modern vaccines protect against major Covid species from the Delta species.”
