| Czech president tests Covid-19 positive, returning to hospital

Czech President Milos Zeman tested Covid-19 and returned to hospital Thursday after being released early in the morning to receive further treatment, his office said, confirming media reports.

The office said the 77-year-old president’s career would be suspended while he received Covid-19 support.

Zeman was due on Friday to elect a new cabinet after the October election.

A veteran left-hander was hospitalized on October 10, shortly after election day, and received treatment for liver problems that doctors say could be acirrhosis.

Zeman left Prague’s Military University Hospital (UVN) for treatment at his home in the Lany chateau west of Prague on Thursday morning.

But on Thursday afternoon, Zeman “tested Covid-19 within the standards of the home assistant. Unfortunately, the results were positive,” Ovcacek said.

“The president will be suspended while receiving Covid-19 support,” he added when Zeman was returned to UVN.

Local journalists say Zeman, who received three doses of Covid-19 vaccine, showed no signs of the disease.

Zeman was due to vote for the Fiala on Friday, but the disease permanently suspended the ceremony.

Fiala is the chairman of the right wing of the Civic Democratic Party, who teamed up with the Christian Democrats in the middle right-wing of the TOP 09 party to form a Together coalition that won the October election.

Together they defeated the well-known ANO team of outgoing Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

The coalition joined forces with a large group of Mayors and Independents and the Pirate Party to get 108 votes in the 200-seat parliament.

The five parties formed a government while Zeman, who would often be the mediator in post-election negotiations, was in hospital.

Zeman, who will name the next prime minister and then the government in accordance with the country’s constitution, said he had a problem with one person in the Fiala cabinet, saying Russia’s pro-Zeman would insist on change.

But Zeman’s recent layoffs have delayed things at a time when the Czech Republic, an EU member of 10.7 million people, is battling a daily increase in Covid-19 infections.

The Czech Ministry of Health filed 18,004 new cases on Wednesday after 25,877 yesterday.

The rise led to the outgoing government of Babis announcing new bans on Thursday, including the closure of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, as well as all Christmas markets.

Eastern hospitals are running low and some have even moved patients to smaller hospitals across the country.
