Robertson, 39, followed 3-1, then 5-3, before facing 11 more successful games. Alexandra Palace to the end with a clear break of 119 in frame 10.

The Australian also wanted two eagles to pick nails – the second he received when Williams, 29 and 27 years old, hit the green as he tried to turn yellow.

Robertson, who has won the Masters title only once – beating Shaun Murphy a decade ago, then worked hard to cross the finish line with a 6-5 victory.

Fighting tears, country number four, who will meet or Judd Trump or Barry Hawkins in a Sunday show, said: “Don’t give up, never give up. It does not matter what it looks like.

“To have a race that ends like that, you probably won’t see it again in the game.

“It was very impressive and it will take a few hours for this to happen. It has to be one of the best things I do in my career.

“The difficulty was huge and I played the best snooker in yellow. The green was one of the best balls I ever knocked on my job. And I was able to catch myself together at the end.

“I feel like I have nothing to lose because I came out of this race, so that could make me a dangerous person tomorrow.”
