Merkel says Russian aggression against Ukraine should lead to EU sanctions

Published on: 25/11/2021 – 19:51

The European Union should be prepared to impose more sanctions on Russia if the situation in eastern Ukraine or the Belarus-Poland border grows, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday.

Merkel spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Thursday.

Both Russia and Ukraine exercised this week after several weeks climbing conflicts between Kyiv and Moscow, where thousands of refugees from the Middle East and other high-risk areas are confined to the eastern border of the European Union, which the bloc claims to be. problems posed by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

In an interview with Zelenskiy, the outgoing German leader also helped and said that trying to undermine Ukraine’s independence “would not go unnoticed” but resolving the issue should always be his preferred option, his spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Twitter.

At her meeting in Berlin with Morawiecki, Merkel said the EU should be cooperative in matters of Belarus’ “weapons” of Polish immigrants and sending Russian troops closer to its borders with Ukraine.

Poland has sent troops and police to its border with Belarus to prevent a group of migrants from crossing. Morawiecki said in doing so, Poland is protecting the EU and Germany from the “big wave” of immigrants and said the bloc should reconsider further sanctions against Minsk.

The EU accuses Minsk of flying in the country and sending them across EU borders in an attempt to disrupt its western neighbors and the rest of the bloc. Lukashenko denies that.

While Merkel said she thought Poland was doing its best to keep the border afloat, she lamented the difficulties that migrants on both sides face.

“We are concerned that the people of Belarus are being treated with dignity and respect,” Merkel said. “We have also discussed humanitarian aid along the Polish border.”
