Tuchel said his team should be drawn but the Citizens ruled what many say is a game that ends the tournament.

“Obviously it’s a big game and I think he came here, he had a very good plan,” De Bruyne said.

“They were very strong in defense but we played a very good game. Obviously” it is good to score a goal, it is important because it is the only one. I think the team played very well today.

“I think it’s always hard to play with them. He’s very strong in defense, he knows what he’s doing and you have to be patient.

“I don’t think we gave much away so I think we played the game we were supposed to play. We should not play freely because then it is dangerous and I think we did what we were supposed to do.”

At his 70-minute hit, he added: “I just walked away from him at the right time. I was looking at where the chances were but they were coming down, going down, so I just found the little corner and it worked perfectly.”
