Innenministerin Nancy Faeser will Koalition für neue EU-Asylpolitik schmieden

The European Union asylum system has been around for many years. The New Interior Minister now wants to change this: Along with other countries, he now wants to lead the way there – though not everyone wants to take part.

In an effort to stem the tide of anti-EU survival policies that have been going on for years, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants to form a “coalition of recipient nations” along with others. Such an alliance could move forward and thus lead to further development of the European security system, SPD politician said Friday after a meeting with EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson in Berlin. His initial discussions with France and Italy on migration were encouraging. The minister did not try to estimate the magnitude of this “willful alliance” in the end.

This is not about “a global effort,” stressed the Deputy Leader of the FDP, Konstantin Kuhle. “The goal should be for other member states to follow up over time.” The steps now announced will not replace the asylum system. Instead, he contributed to the smooth running of the negotiations.

Opposing illegal backsliding

The transition to the Belarussian border has shown that EU countries can be successful if they work together, said EU Commissioner Johansson. About 5,000 of the refugees “trapped” by Belarus Governor Alexander Lukashenko have now returned to their homeland. Recently, no migrants to other countries who have come to the European Union by mistake, he stressed.

Taking asylum seekers is not the only way to show solidarity, Johansson said. Member countries can also ensure that undocumented migrants are repatriated to their countries of origin.

Johansson should ensure that so-called pushbacks – for example, the rejection of refugees – stand at EU borders outside Poland, Greece or Croatia, said Pro Asyl chief Günter Burkhardt. He added: “The coalition of activists should also force non-compliance with EU law and allow asylum seekers to enter the EU.”

Horst Seehofer’s criticism

“While it is difficult to find common ground in asylum policies at EU level, cooperation is possible in more detail,” said home affairs spokesman SPD parliamentary speaker Sebastian Hartmann. As examples, he cited a few basic principles of survival as well as care and shelter for asylum seekers. “If this is not addressed, we will not be able to address the issue of second relocation.” The second migration is when refugees move from one EU country to another.

It is commendable that Germany “is also playing a very important role in the negotiations that have taken place over the transition to the European security system,” said Marcel Emmerich, chairman of the Greens committee on the internal committee. Humanitarian strategies were “blinded or blindly neglected” by Faeser’s lead, Horst Seehofer (CSU). With a group of EU member states, Germany can now bring a lot of momentum to the negotiations and ensure that things are in order.

From the Union point of view, it is a voluntary thought. “The auto government wants to ask Germany to move forward, but experience shows that no other European country can survive,” said home affairs spokesman Alexander Throm (CDU). The result will be “that we will carry the burden of migration on our own”. Deputy President Andrea Lindholz (CSU) warned: “With his announcement, the Federal Minister of the Interior is making false propaganda to move more people to Europe.”
