How “green” hydrogen will help a distillery raise its environmental game

DIISTILLERY is planning to cut down on its carbon footprint by producing “green” hydrogen at the site.

The Arbikie Highland Estate Museum near Montrose, Angus, has received a £ 3m government grant for the project.

The wind turbine and electrolyser emit enough hydrogen to replace the oil used in steam to melt.

The project will be carried out by UK renewables company Locogen in collaboration with hydrogen expert Logan Energy.

Phase 2 funding comes from the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) Net Zero Innovation Portfolio through its Green Distilleries competition.

The competition aims to help distilleries reduce their CO2 emissions by one million tons.

Hydrogen burning does not produce any carbon dioxide, so the Arbikie project represents a process of refining oil for modern purposes.

This work demonstrates the technical potential of using hydrogen as a fuel for distillation and other heating processes.

Andy Lyle, CEO of Locogen, said: “This is a good result for Arbikie and offers a great opportunity to show how distilleries, and many industries, can use new technologies to create clean, sustainable businesses.”

Bill Ireland, CEO of Logan Energy, said: “With the need to shift to zero technology, the project is just another example of new ways hydrogen can address energy challenges, such as global warming. – from home is one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks. “

Iain Stirling, Director at Arbikie Distillery, said: “We want to be one of the world’s largest repositories so that the use of green hydrogen energy will be an integral part of our sustainable journey.”

The Arbikie project will feature a 1MW wind turbine on the Arbikie farm, which will export the electricity generated to green hydrogen through a dedicated wire.

A green hydrogen facility will be established at Arbikie Distillery and consists of an electrolyser, compressor and storage.

Green hydrogen will be produced by the electrolyser and the direct pipe will carry the stored hydrogen from the storage container to the existing planting chamber.

The burner and boiler associated with hydrogen burning will be used to produce steam that emits distillation heat.
