France cancels migrants meeting with UK after PM letter

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told his UK counterpart Priti Patel this morning that he was blocking talks he had planned for the weekend, in protest of a letter written by Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the plight of immigrants.

Darmanin told Patel that a letter from Johnson to President Emmanuel Macron urging France to repatriate migrants crossing the Channel was “disappointing”.

Commenting on how Johnson wrote the letter on television, he added: “Publicity made it even worse. That’s why I have to cancel our meeting in Calais on Sunday.”

France was planning to host ministers from all Channel countries, including Patel, at a controversial summit on migration to Calais on Sunday, later. 27 migrants lost their lives this week off the coast of France in a catastrophic catastrophe like this.

Johnson wrote to Macron yesterday asking for France immediately begin to repatriate all immigrants who arrived in England after crossing the Channel and, in a strange way, posted all the notes of the letter on Twitter.

Rehabilitating refugees “could significantly reduce – if not stop – crossing, saving the lives of thousands of people by cracking down on terrorist trade routes” that lead to smuggling, he said.

Johnson’s letter also outlined areas for cooperation with France, promoting border patrols, aviation control and knowledge sharing.

The new line adds to the tensions after Brexit between Britain and France.
