Several European countries suspended flights to South Africa on Friday due to new coronavirus problems and a number of changes in the region.
Germany has declared South Africa a “various viral sites,” Health Minister Jens Spahn wrote on Twitter. That means “planes are only allowed to carry Germans” from the world.
All arrivals should be kept in solitary confinement for 14 days, whether they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or recovered, Spahn added.
Dutch officials did the same, announcing that they would ban flights from South Africa to the Netherlands from midnight.
This follows a call by the European Union for member states to consider “stop flights” from southern Africa due to a new strain of the virus. Italy and the Czech Republic also followed the advice from Brussels.
Rome has banned the entry of all immigrants from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland. Prague has also stated that non-foreigners who recently came to South Africa will not be allowed to enter Czechia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the number of recent changes has raised serious concerns about disease, treatment and vaccination.
The UK has also banned flights to and from South Africa and its neighbors, the country’s health agency says. “This is the worst kind we’ve ever seen so far.”
