Many hackers are concerned about the secrets that surround modern “smart” weapons, but it’s hard to say that the ability to remotely control remote weapons in your home is unreasonable. Enter self-made, open-ended projects like Home Assistant. This provides an opportunity to design a home-made machine without having your own
life a lot of sales, but as you might expect, you have to make an effort to profit from it.
For example, consider this Phillips AC4014 air cleaner that [Anton] connected by Home Assistant via ESP32. Instead of being obsessed with the internal cleaning tools of the amazing cleaners, they took the easy way out and turned on a few buttons on the electric batteries and fans; this allows the device to be easily controlled by a microcontroller, without affecting the function of the original systems.
But since their future regimes are still in operation, that means [Anton] needed a way for ESP32 to recognize the status of the device and to report to the Home Assistant to make everything compatible. So they looked around the PCB to find the way it was fixed when the air purifier started working, which he connected to a microcontroller pin via a transistor. This allows the firmware to determine if the machine is running or not just by checking that the correct pin is up.
Regarding firmware, [Anton] decided to use ESPHome instead of trying to write its code from scratch. This project gives you the opportunity to add new tools to the Home Assistant by providing firmware and a simple YAML conversion file, which you have provided for example. Instead, you have provided many examples with this project, down to a detailed PCB diagram showing where to insert your wires. It has done a great job for anyone with such an air conditioner.
This feature does not appear to be able to control the air in the room, but recently we have seen a cheap IKEA item that can do the same. Even better, it can be easily modified to communicate your online findings using ESP8266.
