A gas spill in a Siberian coal mine killed at least 52 people on Thursday, Russian media reported, including six rescuers who were sent to try to evacuate several men who had been at one of Russia’s worst mining accidents in more than 10 years.

The Regional Investigative Committee said three people, including the chief of Listvyazhnaya mine and his deputy, had been arrested on suspicion of violating industrial security laws.

It reported that the miners were extinguished when the inlet shaft filled with air. State video video said protesters believe the methane blast occurred.

The dead included 11 miners who had been pronounced dead, 35 who were reported missing, and six rescuers.

Many people were hospitalized, some of them because of secondhand smoke. Four were in critical condition.

The Kemerovo coal mine, located about 2,500 miles[3,500 km]east of Moscow, has been the scene of devastating mining accidents for years.

Listvyazhnaya mine is part of SDS-Holding, a secret Siberian Business Union. The owner had no immediate comment.

About 285 people were inside the mine when smoke spread through the air, the Ministry of Emergency Management said. Officials say 239 officers arrived on the scene.

President Vladimir Putin said he had spoken to the governor and emergency officials, and the Kremlin said he had instructed the emergency minister to fly to the region to help.

Kemerovo announced three days of mourning.

In 2007, the region was the scene of some of the worst mining accidents since the fall of the Soviet Union. Ulyanovskaya mine explosion killed more than 100 people. In 2010, explosion of the Raspadskaya regional mine killed more than 90 people.
