David Suzuki apologizes for saying pipelines could be 'blown up'

Environmentalist David Suzuki has apologized for the fact that the pipes have been “blown up” if government officials do not take action on climate change.

Suzuki made the remarks in an interview with CHEK News on Saturday, during a series of demonstrations in Victoria organized by the Extinction Rebellion group.

“We’re in deep, doo-doo,” Suzuki said at the time.

“And the leading experts have been telling us for over 40 years. This is what we have come for. The next phase after this, there will be explosive pipes if our leaders do not listen to what is happening.”

The environmentalist apologized through his foundation Thursday, and said he spoke with great frustration.

“The words I spoke were not well chosen and I should not have said them,” the statement said.

“Any notion that violence cannot be prevented is wrong and will not lead us to a solution to the climate problem. My words were uttered out of sheer frustration and apology.”

Opposition in Alberta

Suzuki’s words promptly encouraged him opposition from the Alberta government, including Prime Minister Jason Kenney, Energy Minister Sonya Savage and Prime Minister Jason Nixon.

Kenney initially accused Suzuki of inciting violence Monday on Twitter, and later, at a press conference Tuesday, when he also said he believed Suzuki was inciting people to commit terrorism.

“It’s like in terrorist movies where they say, ‘You know, the best little pipe you have there. It would be horrible if something happened to it.’ This is irrelevant, “Kenney said.

He also said that Suzuki has a history of obscene comments that should have been “removed”.

He cited the 2016 model, when Suzuki suggested that former Prime Minister Stephen Harper be imprisoned for “deliberate blindness” due to climate change, which was reported by National Post at the time.

“We resolve conflicts peacefully and democratically – not threatening to imprison our enemies,” Kenney said.

“And now he says, ‘Hold on, shake, squirrel, squirrel, be a bad thing if something happens to those pipes.’ That is disgusting and should be mentioned as such. “

The Prime Minister also criticized the CBC and other agencies for providing the Suzuki platform.

The official criticism of Suzuki’s comments was moved to the Alberta Parliament on Tuesday.

Alberta Official Opposition members also condemned Suzuki’s claims.

Kathleen Ganley, the NDP’s representative in Calgary-Mountain View, said all sides of the building could agree that “violence or incitement to violence to express anything” should be condemned.

Before apologizing, Suzuki told CBC News that she did not agree to blow up the pipes. But he said he feared it could happen if the teams got tired and did nothing.

“Our leaders are not listening to the urgency needed to address the issue of climate change. And I was concerned that this was the next step – if it should continue – for the people who are shooting the pipes,” he said.

Many climate-related protests have been examples of “peaceful disobedience to the people,” Suzuki said, pointing to the violence coming from the government and the RCMP.

“When you look at the people at Fairy Creek, what are they doing? They are fighting to protect Mother Earth, and all the violence comes from forces that want to preserve culture,” Suzuki said, referring to protests against deforestation on the island of Vancouver which lasted for one year.
