Concern new COVID-19 variant may have potential to evade immunity

New corona virus the differences with the “star cluster” of new changes have been found in South Africa.

Scientists say they are concerned about the rapid pace of change and rapid spread among young people in Gauteng, the country’s most populous province, Health Minister Joe Phaahla has announced.

Currently known as B.1.1.529, a new version has also been discovered in Botswana and Hong Kong among travelers from South Africa, he said.

The World Health Organisation’s technical team is meeting tomorrow to review the new format and can decide whether to name it from the Greek alphabet.

And the British government announced that it was banning flights from South Africa and five other southern African countries from noon (1200GMT) on Friday, and that anyone who had just arrived from these countries would be asked to test for coronavirus.

Coronavirus grows as it spreads and many new species, including those with disturbing mutations, often just die off. Scientists are studying new and potentially fatal mutations, but determining whether new species may affect human health could take time.

South Africa has seen a sharp rise in new diseases, Phaahla said at a press conference on Thursday.

“In the last four or five days, there has been a significant increase,” he said, adding that the new reforms seem to be driving the rise in crime. Scientists in South Africa are working hard to determine the number of new cases that have occurred as a result of these new changes.

Currently known as B.1.1.529, a new species has also been discovered in Botswana and Hong Kong among travelers from South Africa, said Phaahla.

The emergence of this new species led the UK to place South Africa on its red list.

British experts believe that another strain, the most widespread in South Africa, could reduce vaccination rates by as much as 30 percent.

The UK’s health secretary, Sajid Javid, said there was concern that the new nation “could be” more contagious than the delta nation, and that “the vaccines we have will not be effective” in tackling them.

Flights from South Africa and five other African countries to the UK have been suspended since Friday, Javid said.

The new species is experiencing “a new stellar evolution,” said Tulio de Oliveira, of the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa, which followed the delta expansion of the country.

“The biggest change is to worry that the immune system is predictable and spread,” de Oliveira said.

“These new mutations have many changes,” including more than 30 protein-related proteins, he said. “We can see that these differences can spread very quickly. We expect to begin to see medical stress in the next few days and weeks.”

A de Oliveira said a team of scientists from seven South African universities was studying the genre. They have a total of 100 genomes and expect to have many more in the next few days, he said.

“We are concerned about the jump in evolution in these species,” he said. One good thing is that it can be detected by PCR tests, he said.

Following the slow spread of South Africa reporting more than 200 new cases per day, last week new daily cases rose sharply to 1200 on Wednesday. Thursday jumped to 2465.

“This is a very different thing to be aware of,” said Ravindra Gupta, a professor of clinical medicine at Cambridge University. “It has many changes that can affect the spread and response of the immune system.”

South Africa, with a population of 60 million, has registered more than 2.9 million COVID-19 people including more than 89,000 dead.

To date, the Delta species is still highly contagious and is infested with other species that were previously worried about alpha, beta and mu. According to the sequence in which countries around the world store the largest warehouse in the world, more than 99 percent is Delta.
