Community Activists Call for Transparency in Prince George's Police Oversight

Protesters marched on Prince George’s County office on Thursday demanding that police be more open.

The Maryland General Assembly passed a law in its 2021 section requiring the establishment of police accountability boards.

Some residents of Prince George’s County who testified before the state legislature to support the change in police force in Maryland are skeptical of how Prince George’s County meets the government’s requirements to enforce the law.

“We just say, ‘County Chief, let’s do it right,’ ‘said Dawn Dalton, co-founder of the JustUs Initiative.

The Maryland General Assembly now wants law enforcement agencies to have community-based police response boards. The government provided the necessary infrastructure, but everything else is in every region.

“It is the work of the people that we want to happen and not the way they want it to happen without what we have provided,” said Tamara McKinney, founder of Concerned Citizens for Bail Reform.

Earlier this month, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks wrote on Twitter asking interested people to submit a startup, which left some wondering what had happened along the way.

“For Prince George’s County to register a group that does not have a rotation system and no one knows what is going on, it just happens randomly,” said Beverly John of the Maryland Coalition for Justice and Police Accountability.

In Calvert County, there have been public meetings to form a panel that approves the views of the community before discussing the election.

This is what freedom fighters like Nikki Owens want in Prince George’s County.

“My cousin William Green is a good example of why this rush is the wrong decision,” said Nikki Owens.

Prince George’s County police Cpl. Michael Owen is charged with shooting and killing Green. Owen did not respond. He has a long history of suspicious activity that appears to have been unanswered, and further charges have been filed against him and the district.

“Instead, this man committed all his crimes as a police officer, then he just ran away,” Owens said. “My cousin was not the first person to be killed.”

Alsobrooks says the government is in the process of changing the police force because of a group that reviewed their department two years ago.

“Prince George is at the forefront of all those areas, and we have a team that we formed in 2020, so we are not behind anyone when it comes to tackling this problem,” he said.

The Office of the Ombudsman is in the process of drafting a code of conduct that will require public comment and will hold public hearings on each of the selected committees.
