Interpol has appointed General Ahmed Naser al-Raisi – the Emirati chief accused of overseeing torture – as their new president.

Interpol announced al-Raisi’s victory on his Twitter account on Thursday, adding that he would be four years old, as it were.

Al-Raisi is the head of the United Arab Emirates security forces.

Two British men arrested in the UAE said they were the ones who tortured them during their detention, The Guardian reports. One was arrested in 2018 and the other in 2019.

The UAE refuses to torture the two men.

Nine human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and the European Center for Democracy and Human Rights, wrote to Interpol in 2020 “expressing concern” about al-Raisi’s leadership, citing the UAE’s bad reputation.

“Lawyers, journalists, political activists and human rights activists in the UAE have been subjected to harsh criticism, intimidation, coercion, torture, and imprisonment for expressing their views peacefully, in addition to false ‘terrorism’ allegations,” they wrote.

Three members of the European Parliament also warned earlier this month that al-President should be President, The Guardian reports.

The role of the president is usually formal, and the secretary-general presides over many of his or her duties.

Former President of Interpol Meng Hongwei, a native of China, went missing in 2018 on a trip to China. At the time, his wife called the case “political persecution,” while Interpol he said the agency’s rules prohibit the investigation of losses.

Another later said Meng was imprisonment, accused him of bribery, and sentenced him to 13 and a half years in prison.
