Cricket Australia coach Nick Hockley was overjoyed at the country’s new Test captain on Friday – calling him “the best player and leader” in confirming the story.

“He is highly regarded by his teammates and in all aspects of the game because of his attitude and action, both on and off the pitch,” said Hockley.

“We are very fortunate to have a team of great players who are top leaders. I have no doubt that Pat and Steve will be well supported in their leadership roles.”

Australian sprinter Cummins himself did not hide his interest in the news, uttering his words.

Cummins said: “I am honored to take on this role ahead of what will be the great summer of the Ashes. I hope I can give the same leadership that Tim (Paine) has given the team a few years ago.

“With Steve as a leader, the greatest player on the team and the most talented youngsters to come, we are a very strong and connected team.

“We are very concerned about his life with (wife) Bonnie and we are not saying anything yet.”
