Defender Neil Robertson was stunned by professional footballer John Astley in the first UK Championship tournament in. York
Astley, 32, dropped the professional tour last year but netted 119 minutes in the seventh round on a 6-2 victory.
Astley is the second youngster to beat UK champion this week after Shaun Murphy was sacked by Si Jiahui of China on the opening day.
And the result is a huge embarrassment for Robertson after agreeing with what Murphy said Tuesday that amateurs were not fit to play on a professional tour.
Astley, best known for his role in the snooker series ‘The Nap’ in Crucible in 2016, was seen as a ‘top player’ because there were not enough professionals to complete the 128-player role.
He used a lazy start with Robertson to lead 3-1, then increased his chances with 83 nerves Robertson fired a red shot in the middle.
The Australian, who won the title in a thrilling victory over Judd Trump last year, responded with a 124 break to reduce the 4-2 deficit.
But Astley won 119 to climb 5-2, before crossing the line to finish the best win of his career, and one of the biggest disappointments in the race.
