Albanese's cheeky election campaign 'regret'

Weekend Today presenter Jayne Azzopardi is one of the thousands of Australians with COVID-19 who voted by phone today, and gave the process a big tick.

Australian Electoral Commission figures show 27,000 people have voted over the phone, with another 45,000 registered to do so today under an emergency measure confirmed yesterday.

“I tested positive on the Monday evening … thankfully they changed those rules yesterday,” Azzopardi said.

“I called them up at 8.05 this morning, on hold for maybe less than 10 minutes … a very lovely lady answered.

“I had my laptop open with the ballot papers in front of me so I could see what I was voting for. I read out my preferences to her, she put them on the paper, put them in the envelope, off they went, all done in 15 minutes.

“Given they had to do it very last minute, they did a really great job.”

The AEC warned phone voters to expect delays today and advised people to do their research beforehand on who they intend to vote for.
